
Agitating students of Rajshahi University on Wednesday confined the university’s top officials including vice-chancellor and pro-vice chancellors for two hours to press home their five-point demand including withdrawal of the decision to close the university and its halls.
Till filing this report at 4:15pm, the agitating students were seen taking position in front of four entrances of the university administration building.
Earlier, the agitating students took position in front of the university administration building in the morning to protest against the authorities’ decision of closing the university and its residential halls.
From the sit-in, the agitating students placed their five-point demand, including withdrawal of the decision to close the university and its halls, prohibiting student politics at the halls and ousting non-students and outsiders from the hall.
At about 2:30pm, RU vice-chancellor Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar appeared before the protesters and told them that he could not impose a ban on student politics at the halls as it was contrary to the university act.
‘The university has been closed and the students are asked to leave the halls following the direct order of the government,’ he said.
As the university authorities denied to meet the students’ demands, the later confined the university officials inside the administration building at about 2:35pm.
The agitating students said that they would not leave the university administration building until their demands were met.
