
Today is the 24th death anniversary of journalist and writer Shamsur Rahman.
Local journalists’ organisations, Jashore Press Club, and relatives of will Shamsur Rahman observe the day with elaborated programmes in Jashore.
To mark the day, Jashore Press Club, Journalists Union of Jashore and Jashore Journalists Union will place wreaths at his grave and hold prayer sessions.
On July 16, 2000, Shamsur Rahman, a special correspondent of daily Janakantha and a stringer of BBC Bangla Service, was shot dead by unidentified assailants at his office in Daratana area of Jashore city.
The incident spurred movement particularly of the journalists in Jashore and also across the country.
Selina Akhter Lucky, wife of Shamsur Rahman, filed a case with Kotwali model police station in the district.
The criminal investigation department, where the case was later shifted, submitted charge sheet, accusing 16 people, five of whom were journalists, including Farazi Ajmal Hossain, special correspondent, Daily Ittefaq after the incident.
In 2005, the case was shifted to the speedy tribunal, Khulna.
The case came to a halt as the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court had issued a stay order on the case several years ago, in response to a petition made by Farazi Ajmal Hossain, said Sajed Rahman, younger brother of Shamsur Rahman and also staff correspondent, daily Janakantha.
He said that they had become frustrated seeking justice.
