The High Court on Monday asked the government authorities to monitor perpetrators to prevent cutting of hillocks in Sylhet.

The court issued the directive to the deputy commissioner of Sylhet, the mayor of Sylhet City and the Department of Environment’s director general (Sylhet) to carry out the directive and submit their reports in every six months.

The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolan passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer and Justice Watch Foundation’s executive director Mahfuzur Rahman Milon drawing the court’s attention to a report.

The report was published in a daily newspaper on March 11 under the headline ‘30 per cent of the hillocks vanished in two and a half decades.’

The court also asked the government authorities to explain in four weeks why they would not be directed to take action against those involved in cutting hillocks.

The court further asked the authorities to explain why their failure to protect the hillocks from grabbers would not be declared illegal.
