The Anti-Corruption Commission on Thursday filed a charge sheet against five individuals, including Subrata Kumar Halder, a serving superintendent of police, for allegedly accepting Tk 1.69 crore in bribes from job aspirants in Madaripur.
ACC submitted the charge sheet to a special judge court in Madaripur after the commission approved the charges against the five people in the case, said ACC public relations officer Aktarul Islam.
SP Subarata is currently posted at the DIG office of police in the Rangpur Range. The other accused are sacked police constables Nuruzzaman Sumon and聽 Jahidul Islam, former medical assistant at Madaripur District Hospital Pias Bala, and former trainee sub-inspector Golam Raman.
On July 5, 2023, ACC deputy director Hafizul Islam filed the case with the integrated district office in Madaripur, against the accused, including Subrata, who was then SP of Madaripur.
According to the charge sheet, the police issued a circular on May 28, 2019, to recruit 9,680 constables, including 54 constables from Madaripur.
A three-member committee, headed by SP Subrata, was responsible for the recruitment process. Out of 993 applicants, 364 passed the physical test, and the written examination took place on June 23, 2019.
Following the allegation of irregularities, a special team of police recovered approximately Tk 73.5 lakh from the accused, who had been paid bribes.
During the investigation, the ACC found a special symbol in the bottom right corner of the first page of the exam papers belonging to 32 candidates.
These symbols indicated that extra marks had been awarded specifically for the English segment of the answer sheets. SP Subrata prepared and evaluated the answer sheets.
ACC found that SP Subrata鈥檚 bodyguard Nuruzzaman, aided by Pias Bala and Jahidul, had collected Tk 1.69 crore from job seekers.
The corruption incident came to light when Tk 52 lakh was recovered by authorities from the residence of TSI Golam Rahman.
