
A case was filed on Saturday against 66 leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League and its youth front Jubo League for beating and hacking main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Natore district unit acting convener Shahidul Islam Bachchu on Wednesday.
Sultana Pervin, wife of Shahidul Islam who has been undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, filed the case accusing 16 named and 40 to 50 unnamed people, said Natore police station officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman.
He said that they had already arrested three named accused – Rasu, Sobuj, and Rana – after the case was filed.
‘We are trying to arrest the other accused,’ the OC added.
On Wednesday, a group of AL and JL activists reportedly beat and hacked Shahidul Islam Bachchu while he was heading to the party office to attend a rally, demanding the release of Khaleda Zia.
A group of AL and Juba League activists also beat up five other BNP leaders on their way to the rally and attacked the rally, leaving chief guest and forest and environment affairs secretary of the party Mohammad Mossaddeq Hossain Bulbul injured.
Of the injured, five were admitted to different hospitals in Natore, while Shahidul Islam Bachchu was referred to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital authorities.
He had been beaten and hacked all over his body, and the wrist of his right hand was nearly severed.
Singra upazila and municipality BNP leaders and activists, meanwhile, brought out a protest procession on the Natore-Bogura highway and held a rally in front of the Natore Bus Stand area to protest against the attack on Shahidul Islam Bachchu.
