The High Court has yet to release its full verdict in a case related to the extremist attack on Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1, 2016, which killed 22 people, 17 of whom were foreign nationals.
In a short verdict on October 30, 2023, the High Court commuted the death sentences of seven extremists to imprisonment until death on the ground that they did not directly participate in the attack.
The seven convicted extremists are Jahangir Hossain alias Rajib Gandhi alias Abu Omar, Aslam Hossain Rash, Hadisur Rahman alias Sagor, Rakibul Hasan聽 Rigan alias Rafiul Islam, Md Abdus Sabur Khan alias Sohel Mahfuz, Shariful Islam Khaled, and Mamunur Rashid Ripon.
The High Court pronounced the verdict after hearing death references and appeals of the seven convicts, who were sentenced to death by the Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal in Dhaka on November 27, 2019.
Attorney general AM Amin Uddin told reporters at a briefing on Sunday that the government would decide if an appeal would be filed or not against the verdict after getting the text of it.
He said that the government did not file a provisional petition in the Appellate Division seeking permission to appeal against the reduction of the death sentence of the seven convicts as they could not be released from jail following the High Court鈥檚 verdict.聽
Lawyer Mohammad Amimul Ahsan, who defended the extremists, told 抖阴精品 that he was also waiting for the full text of the verdict to appeal against it.聽
On July 1, 2016, a group of armed extremists stormed the upscale cafe Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan, killing 22 people, mostly foreigners, and leaving many others hostage.
The hostage crisis ended following an army-led commando operation on July 2, 2016.
The five main attackers鈥擭ibras Islam, Mir Sabeh Mubashir, Rohan Ibne Imtiaz, Khairul Islam Payel, and Shafiqul Islam Uzzal鈥攚ho ran the pre-planned strike on the establishment were killed in the operation.
The lower court sentenced the seven extremists to death for aiding and abetting the Holey Artisan attackers with training, supplies of arms, and planning to carry out the attack.
