THE main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party Rajshahi district unit convener Abu Sayed Chad was released from Rajshahi Central Jail on Sunday, 13 months after his arrest in a case on charge of issuing a death threat to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a public rally.
He was released after the bail order reached the prison from a Faridpur court, said Rajshahi Central Jail jailer Md Aman Ullah.
On May 19, 2023, at a rally organised by the BNP Rajshahi district and city units protesting at harassment and arrest of opposition activists and government corruption, Abu Sayed reportedly said that their only demand was to send Hasina to grave.
He reportedly said, ‘There would be no 27-point or 10-point demand. The only demand is to send Sheikh Hasina to her grave. We will do everything needed to force her to resign from power,’
At least 21 cases were filed in different districts against Chad and he was arrested on May 25, 2023.
After his release from jail, Abu Sayed Chad rushed to his native village to see his wife Shahan Begum, 60, who passed away Saturday noon.
Earlier, Chad was released for two hours on parole on March 24, 2024 to attend the namaz-e-janaza of his mother Ashrafunnesa, 96, at Maria village of Charghat in Rajshahi.
