
A youth named Asif Rahman Lyon, an honours final year student at Government Braja Lal College in Khulna, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday after being hacked at Rajapur in Jhalakati allegedly due to previous enmity over a land dispute.
The victim, Lyon, 24, son of Shah Alam Jamaddar, the head teacher of Madhya Charail Secondary School at Rajapur, is a resident of Kanudaskati village under Galua union of Rajapur upazila in Jhalakati.
The attackers left Lyon injured at Katakhali market under Galua union of Rajapur upazila at about 4:30pm on Thursday.
Later, locals rescued Asif and took him to Rajapur Upazila Health Complex in a critical condition.
He was sent to Dhaka on Thursday night for better treatment as his condition deteriorated.
At about 3:30am on Friday, he died at the hospital while undergoing treatment there.
The body was taken to the hospital morgue for an autopsy at about 12:30pm on Friday.
Anik Rahman, elder brother of the victim, said that their opponent Alam Shikder’s people carried out the attack on Lyon with locally made weapons and sticks to kill him as there had been land disputes between their family and Alam Shikdar and his family.
Shah Alam, father of Lyon, said that at least 15 to 20 people, including Alam Sikdar’s son Sajib, Hasan, Likhon, Chayan, Rajib, Rahman Kazi’s son Dulal Kazi, Shakeel, Sajjal, Hakim’s son Enayet, Firoz’s son Ashiq, Dulal Kazi’s son Sayem, Andur Rob’s son Anwar Kazi, Siraj Uddin’s son Shamsu Kazi, carried out the attack.
Alam Sikder could not be reached for his comment despite repeated attempts over the phone.
Ataur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the Rajapur police station, said, ‘We have heard that the injured victim has died at the DMCH, and the dead body will reach Rajapur after an autopsy.’
He also said, ‘We have identified some names of those involved in the attack. Action will be taken after investigating the matter.’
The family of the victim is preparing to file a case with the police station over the incident, he added.
