Sudhin Das

Today is the seventh anniversary of the death of Ekushey Padak-winning Nazrul Sangeet exponent Sudhin Das, who made immense contribution to documenting original notations of the national poet鈥檚 songs.

Born on April 30, 1930 in Cumilla, Sudhin Das began his music career as Nazrul Sangeet singer at Pakistan Radio in 1948.


He grew up listening to Nazrul鈥檚 songs on old gramophone records, and noticed that many singers were singing the songs without care for the original tunes.

He realised the importance of documenting the original notations of Nazrul鈥檚 songs, and started to collect the records that were made in the poet鈥檚 lifetime.

After the death of Kazi Nazrul Islam in 1976, Sudhin Das started writing notations of the songs.

Nazrul Academy published a by Sudhin Das book containing notations of 25 songs in 1985. Subsequently, Nazrul Institute published 33 more books on notations of Nazrul鈥檚 songs done by him. Besides, he also wrote swaralipi for Lalon鈥檚 songs, which Bangla Academy published in a number of volumes.

He received Ekushey Padak in 1988.

Sudhin Das passed away on June 27 in 2017.
