The price of green chilli has surged in recent weeks while that of other essential commodities, including vegetables, has remained high on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka.
The price of green chilli was at Tk聽280-300 a kilogram on Friday on the retail markets in the capital, while the price was Tk聽240-250 a kilogram before Eid-ul-Azha, which was celebrated in the country on June 17.
Green chilli price was at Tk聽200-210 a kilogram as of May 24.
On Friday, the first weekly holiday after Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Muslims, the market activities were to begin in full swing, as people were still in the holiday mood, according to traders.
Retail traders said that the supply of daily commodities was low due to Eid and rains.
They also said that the prices of commodities continued to rise on the retail market as suppliers and wholesalers were charging high prices.
The prices of most the vegetables remained high on the day in the city.
The price of aubergine was Tk 80-100 a kilogram, that of cucumber Tk聽140-160 a kilogram and that of carrot Tk聽130-140 a kilogram on Friday.
The price of bitter gourd increased to Tk聽90-100 a kilogram from Tk聽70-80 a kilogram over the week.
The price of onions also witnessed a rise, as the product was selling for Tk聽95-100 a kilogram, up from Tk聽80-85 a kilogram before Eid.
Retailers said the supply of products on the market would return to normal within a few days.
