A transport worker was killed in a gunfight between two extremist groups in Baghaichari upazila of Rangamati on Tuesday.

The deceased is identified as Md Nayeem, a bus worker of Shanti Paribahan.

Assistant superintendent of police (Baghaichari zone) Md Abdul Awal told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Wednesday, ‘A firing between members of Jana Samhati Samiti and United People’s Democratic Front began on Tuesday morning.’

Nayeem was shot dead while crossing the area where members of the two groups exchanged fire, he said.

He said that law enforcement was active in the area to ensure the safety of tourists in Sajek.

Residents of the area alleged that JSS (MN Larma) and UPDF (Democratic) were carrying out their activities in the area under the nose of the administration.

They alleged that the groups intimidated the residents with weapons in public and collected extortion money.

Babudhan Chakma, member of Sajek Public Rights Protection Committee, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that residents went to the members of UPDF (Democratic) to protest at their activities in the area on Tuesday, when they fired at the local people, leaving one person killed and three residents injured.

Following the incident, the committee condemned the killing of Nayeem and the injury of several others at a protest rally on Wednesday.

The committee gave 48 hours ultimatum with three demands — immediate arrest and punishment of the perpetrators, abolition of armed groups in the area, and withdrawal of Baghaichari Upzila Nirbahi Officer Shirin Akter and Baghaihat zone commander Lieutenant Colonel Khairul Amin.

Convener of the committee and Sajek union parishad chairman Atulal Chakma threatened for continuous protest programmes if the demands were not met within 48 hours.

Protesters alleged that normal activities of the general people in the area were being disrupted because of the armed groups.

They also alleged that they did not get any remedy after repeated complaints to the military and civil administrations regarding the incidents.
