
Bangladesh鈥檚 Sagor Islam became the country鈥檚 second archer after Ruman Shana to earn a direct qualification in the Olympic Games.
He confirmed his Paris Olympics 2024 spot on June 17 when he advanced into the semi-finals of the men鈥檚 recurve individual event of the Archery World Cup Stage-3 in Turkey.
Country鈥檚 ace golfer Siddikur Rahman was the first athlete to earn a direct qualification in the Rio Olympics in 2016 before Shana made it in the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
The 18-year-old archer Sagor finished his journey in Turkey by winning silver after losing the final by 0-6 points to Uzbekistan鈥檚 Amirkhon Sadikov.
Sagor defeated Cuba鈥檚 Franco Hugo by 7-1 points in the semi-final, which he reached after a 6-5 win on a tiebreaker against Li Adam of the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals.
The five-set quarter-final game was tied at 5-5, and Sagor held his nerves for a 10-9 point win in the tiebreaker to move into the semi-finals.
Sagor finished sixth in the qualification round and appeared to be eliminated in the third round after receiving byes in the first two rounds.
Sagor was tied on 5-5 against Denmark鈥檚 Christian Brendstrup in the third round, and the game rolled into tie-breaker in which both archers hit nine out of 10, but Sagor survived the race over Brendstrup as his arrow was nearer to the bull鈥檚-eye.
Sagor beat Nguyen Minh Duc of Vietnam 6-2 to move into the last eight.
Another Bangladeshi campaigner, Ram Krishna Saha, was also just one win away from securing a direct quota place, but he could not make it after suffering a 6-2 defeat to Le Quoc Phong of Vietnam in the quarters.
However, the Bangladesh Archery Federation is expecting a wild card for Hakim Ahmed Rubel, who was eliminated from the pre-quarterfinal satge after a 5-6 loss to Nguyen Duy of Vietnam, for the Paris Olympics.
