Many service seekers in the capital are complaining about delay at banks in paying their fees to the banks working jointly with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority.

According to the service seekers, whenever they go to the banks for paying fees, including tax and tokens, renewal of fitness certificates and route permits for the motor vehicles, they face delay in getting the services for reasons such as server down and delay in printing of the receipts.

Some bank officials told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the problems were mainly related to the server of the BRTA.

BRTA officials said that they also got some complaints about the server and negligence of the bank officials to take the fees.

They are looking forward to expand the services to all other remaining banks in the country, they added.

Currently, the owners are paying various tax and fees for motor vehicles to 18 private banks through their 547 branches and 24 specialised booths across the country.

No government banks are providing the facilities.

BRTA chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder said that the online banking system had been introduced about 10 years ago.

Even after several years of the system, the vehicle owners’ complained about getting these services smoothly.

Some of them complained that they had to roam from bank from bank to pay the tax and fees.

Some bank even stopped providing services.

Farhana Haque, a Dhaka resident, shared her experience faced on Tuesday.

‘On the day at about 12 noon, I went to the One Bank PLC’s Dhanmondi Branch to pay my car’s tax token fees where I was told that the receipts of BRTA fees were not being printed,’ she said.

Then she went to the NRBC Bank PLC’s Panthapath sub branch at around 12:45pm and from there to the National Bank Limited’s Lake Circus branch around 1:15pm to hear the same problem.

‘Then I went to the National Bank Limited’s Dhanmondi branch at around 1:30pm and was able to pay the fees at around 2:30pm,’ she said, adding, ‘It was the last day to pay my fees. So I had to roam from place to place to find a bank to pay.’

She further said that at all these branches the vehicles owners were agitated for not getting the services on time and without sufferings.

Another vehicle owner also said that he faced the same problem at the Modhumoti Bank PLC also.

When he went to the First Security Islami Bank PLC, he was told that the bank stopped providing the services.

National Bank Limited’s Lake Circus branch manager Shah Alam Mohammad Badiuzzaman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Wednesday that earlier they had faced problems to print the receipts as the paper provided by the BRTA for this was too thin.

‘When we informed the authorities of the matter, they had provided us with more solid paper and now we have no problem in providing BRTA related services at our branch,’ he said.

NRBC Bank PLC’s Gulshan branch senior executive officer Md Aynal Sardar said that usually one day per week the BRTA server went down.

Both officials from the two banks said that they had one dedicated officer to provide the services while sometimes the customers became agitated to get services fast.

BRTA chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder said that sometimes their server went down following the server down of the Bangladesh Election Commission as the BRTA server was interlinked with that server.

‘Sometimes some bank officials return some service seekers by saying that the server is down,’ he said, adding that as the banks have contracts with the authorities they should professionally work.

About the First Security Islami Bank PLC, the chairman said that he would look into the matter.

He also said that when the service was introduced the government banks did not have the online system and later they were reluctant to provide the services.

‘Now the government banks are also showing interest to join and we have planned to provide the services through all banks across the country,’ he added.
