Leaders of seven student organisations at Rajshahi University declared the university unit Bangladesh Chhatra League general secretary, Asadulla hil Galib, persona non grata on the campus.
They urged the university administration to take legal and administrative action against Galib, including removing him from the residential halls, as he was occupying two rooms in separate dormitories and was involved in torturing students and committing proxy fraud.
The announcement and demand were made in a joint statement Wednesday night.
The seven student organisations are Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Chhatra Union, Biplabi Chhatra Maitree, Nagorik Chhatra Okya, Biplabi Chhatra-Jubo Andolon, Brihottor Parbatya Chattagram Pahari Chhatra Parishad, and Chhatra Ganamancha. In the statement, signed by the convener of each organisation, the student leaders stated that Galib, who could not complete his first year and was, later, dropped from the university, had been illegally occupying room no 215 of Madar Bux Hall and room no 228 of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, despite not being a legal student.
‘Illegally staying in the hall, Galib has led multiple crimes, including occupying seats, torturing students, and collecting extortion from shopkeepers. These actions have been reported in various newspapers and media,’ they said.
‘Therefore, we urge the university administration to remove Galib from the residential halls and take legal and administrative action against him for illegally staying in the halls, torturing students, and involvement in proxy fraud,’ they added.
On Tuesday, the mass communication and journalism department at RU refuted Galib’s claim that he was a student of the department.
A press release signed by the department chair professor Mozammel Hossain Bokul stated that Galib’s admission to the evening master’s programme was cancelled in September last year due to inconsistencies in the honours certificate, he submitted.
According to the university registrar office, Galib enrolled in the international relations department in the 2014-15 academic session but was, later, dropped as he could not complete his first year in three years.
Galib, later, enrolled in the evening master’s programme at the RU MCJ department in July 2021, submitting an honours certificate from a private university in Dhaka.
When allegations arose that Galib submitted a fake honours certificate, the RU MCJ department contacted the private university, which confirmed that no student named Asadulla hil Galib had ever been enrolled, and the certificate was fake.
Following an emergency meeting, the MCJ department cancelled Galib’s admission in September 2023.
Despite repeated attempts, Galib was not available for comment.
