Teachers and students of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University observed World Environment Day by participating in an event held on campus on Thursday.

The SAU beautification committee, with the support of international development charity Voluntary Service Overseas, organised the event, which began with a procession brought out from in front of the AFM Bahauddin Nasim Administrative Building, said a press release.

The SAU vice-chancellor, Md Shahidur Rashid Bhuiyan, along with teachers and students of the university participated in the procession, which paraded different streets and ended after reaching Sheikh Russel TSC Complex.

After the rally, a brief discussion was held in front of the TSC.

The vice-chancellor addressed teachers, students, officers and employees of the university at the programme.

He said, ‘We have to be more aware of protecting nature and the environment. The temperature has increased at a massive rate in the country due to environmental injustice. Agriculture is facing huge challenges due to the decrease in arable land and environmental disaster.’

‘If nature and the environment are damaged, our existence will be threatened. For the sake of human well-being, we need to develop a close relationship with nature and the environment. Everyone must work together to save the environment,’ he added.

Later, tree saplings were planted in the field adjacent to the TSC.

SAU pro-vice-chancellor Alok Kumar Paul, treasurer Md Nazrul Islam, VSO country director Khabirul Haque Kamal and project manager Md Shafiqur Rahman, among others, participated in the event.
