Education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury on Wednesday said that this year’s Higher Secondary School Certificate and equivalent examinations would be postponed in the areas where flood would affect.

At a press conference, he also said that the ministry was observing the weather forecast and the level of water in the flood prone areas.

‘If the flood affects any area then we will postpone exams only in that particular area,’ he said and added that the postponed exams will be held when the situation improves in the area.

Mohibul also mentioned that all coaching centres across the country would remain closed from June 29 to August 11 to keep the exam environment free from copying and rumours of question paper leak.

The HSC and equivalent examinations will begin on June 30 under 11 education boards across Bangladesh.

A total of 14,50,790 students — 7,50,281 male students and 7,00,509 female students  — are expected to sit for the exams at 2,725 centres, from 9,463 educational institutions.

After a meeting of the National Monitoring and Law and Order Committee to hold the upcoming public exams properly, the minister said these at the press conference at the secretariat in Dhaka.

He said that the HSC and equivalent exams would be held fulltime on all subjects and on the rearranged syllabus.

This year, 5,94,601 female students and 5,33,680 male students are expected to sit for the exams under nine general boards.

Under the Madrasah Education Board, 47,592 male students and 40,484 female students, and under the Technical Education Board, 1,69,009 male students and 65,424 female students are expected to sit for the exams.

Replying to a question, Mohibul said that the number of female students is fewer under the technical board as due to the usual social practice.

‘We hope that the number of students from both gender will become equal following our different initiatives,’ he said.

About the combined admission test to the universities, the minister said that if any autonomous educational institute do not want to join the cluster based admission system then it would be problematic to bring them in.

The press conference was attended among others by the senior ministry officials.

According to the ministry, the theoretical part of the exams will be held between June 30 and August 11 and the practical part of the exams will be held between August 12 and August 21.
