One of the newborn twin sisters was reportedly stolen hours after their birth from the Dhaka Medical College Hospital Tuesday afternoon.
Shariful Islam, a truck helper of Kushita, said that his wife Sukhi Begum gave birth to two babies through C-section at about 8:00am at Gynaecology Ward No 212 of the hospital.
Grandmother of the twins Hasina Begum said that the incident happened at about 1:00pm.
‘Doctors asked us to sit on the corridor outside the maternity ward along with the babies. Later, a woman came along with my son Shariful and took a baby, saying to visit a doctor,’ she said.
Since then, they searched all possible places in and around the hospital, but failed to trace the woman, added Hasina.
DMCH director brigadier general Md Asaduzzaman said that the suspected woman approached Hasina Begum, while she was attending the newborns in the corridor outside the maternity ward.
Later, she fled from there with one of the babies, he said.
‘We already informed Shahbag police station regarding the matter. Police and hospital authorities are trying to identify the suspect through CCTV camera footage,’ DMCH director added.
Shahbag police station inspector (investigation) Shah Alam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that father of the stolen newborn filed a case in the evening.
‘Our team is looking into the matter. We already have CCTV footage of the hospital,’ he said.
