The High Court on Thursday scrapped a lower court verdict that jailed Paritosh Sarkar, a resident of Pirganj in Rangpur, for five years on charge of hurting Muslim religious sentiments.
The bench of Justice Md Ashraful Kamal also acquitted 21-year-old Paritosh, of the charge as the prosecution failed to prove charges in the case filed against him under the Digital Security Act 2018 on the allegation of hurting the religious sentiments.
The court directed the jail authorities to release Paritosh from the jail if he is not wanted in any order case.
Paritosh’ lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that there is no bar for releasing his client from the jail.
The High Court pronounced the verdict after allowing Paritosh’s appeal against the Rangpur Cyber Tribunal’s February 8, 2023, verdict jailing him five years in the case.
Pirganj police sub-inspector Ismail Hossain filed the DSA case on October 17, 2021, for posting remarks on Facebook which allegedly led Muslim people to set houses of 39 Hindu families on fires and damages.  Â
The High Court observed that law enforcers had filed the DSA to cover up their failure to protect houses of the Hindi people.
Attorney general Giasuddin Ahmed represented the state.
