Outgoing Supreme Court judge, Justice Mohammad Abdul Hafiz, at his farewell speech, said on Thursday that amassing crores of taka by a salaried government official astonished the entire Bangladesh.

‘It has astonished people who wonder how a salaried government officer becomes owner of crores of taka—hundreds of crores of taka. The state has to take the responsibility to stop it in the interest of people,’ said Justice Abdul Hafiz while he was felicitated by lawyers and colleagues at the chief justice’s courtroom on the occasion of his farewell.

The chief justice, Obaidul Hassan, on behalf of his colleagues, attorney general AM Amin Uddin on behalf of the state law officers, and the Supreme Court Bar Association president, AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, on behalf of the lawyers, felicitated Justice Abdul Hafiz at the end of the Appellate Division’s proceedings about 12:30pm on his last day at office.

Justice Abdul Hafiz said that corruption was damaging the country’s all achievements.

He called on the government authorities to keep the offices and courts free from corrupt people.

The outgoing Supreme Court judge lamented that false cases were filed regularly in the name of protecting assets, preventing crimes and seeking justice for women and children against repression.

‘False cases are being used as a tool to harass opponents,’ he said.

He also noted that these false cases wasted the valuable time of the courts, observing that false cases had now become a threat to the dispensation of justice.

He urged lawyers to provide the judges with proper assistance so that they can reach to a right decision.

Justice Abdul Hafiz was among the three High Court judges, who were elevated to the Appellate Division on April 25, superseding their senior colleagues.

Justice Abdul Hafiz, who served as the secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association for 2002–2003, was appointed a High Court judge on April 27, 2003.
