Dhaka University colleagues and friends of late professor Zia Rahman remembered him at a discussion on Wednesday.

The university social science faculty organised the memorial discussion to remember its former dean Zia Rahman at the auditorium of Teacher-Student Centre of the university with professor Rasheda Ishrat Nasir, acting dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, in the chair.


DU vice-chancellor ASM Maksud Kamal was present at the event as chief guest.

Among others, the university’s pro-vice-chancellor (Administration) professor Muhammad Samad, pro-vice-chancellor (Education) professor Sitesh Chandra Bachar, president of Dhaka University Teachers’ Association professor Md Nizamul Hoque Buiyan, general secretary professor Zinat Huda, deans of various faculties, provosts of various halls and teachers and students, former Chhatra League president Al Nahiyan Khan Joy, and current president Saddam Hussain, among others, spoke at the meeting .

In his speech as the chief guest, the vice-chancellor said, ‘I never imagined that Zia would leave us so soon.’

‘The criminology department, which he established, has gained in popularity in a short period of time through his efforts. His memory will live on in the department he founded,’ he added.

Pro-vice-chancellor professor Muhammad Samad said, ‘We still can’t believe that Zia is no longer with us. It seems that Zia is still alive.’

‘Zia will live on in our hearts forever,’ professor Samad added.

He suggested establishing a lab named after professor Zia in the Department of Criminology to commemorate professor Zia.

Acting dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, professor Rasheda Irshad Nasir, said, ‘Professor Zia was like a younger brother to me. I never thought I would have to take on his responsibilities.’

Among others, DBC News’ chief editor Manzurul Islam, late Zia Rahman’s wife Fauzia Khan Sheila and his friends were present at the event.

Professor Zia Rahman died in early hours of March 23 due to brain haemorrhage while undergoing treatment at the capital’s Labaid Specialised Hospital.

Professor Zia Rahman was the founding chairman of the Department of Criminology at the University of Dhaka. Additionally, since January 13, 2022, he has been serving as the dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
