The High Court on Tuesday asked the inspector general of police and the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police commissioner to report to the court in seven days what action had been taken against those who demanded extortion from the contractor making murals of country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four national leaders at Boalia in Rajshahi.

The bench of Justice Md Salim and Justice Shahed Nuruddin issued the directive taking into cognisance of a newspaper report, which was published in the Daily Janakantha on Tuesday.

The court also asked the government authorities to explain why they would not be directed to arrest and punish the offenders for creating obstruction in constructing murals of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four national leaders— Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, Captain M Mansur Ali and AHM Quamruzzaman — at Boalia in Rajshahi.

The court asked the IGP, RMP commissioner and Boalia police station officer-in-charge to respond to the rule by June 4, the date for the next hearing.

Lawyers Ozi Ullah and KM Saifuddin Ahmed drew the court’s attention to the newspaper report.
