A group of unidentified people carried out an attack on a car carrying former Awami League lawmaker Golam Maula Rony, who later joined the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, on the Dhaka University campus on Tuesday.

Confirming the matter, Rony said that unknown attackers carried out the attack suddenly on his car at about 12 noon with hammers and fled the scene.

Although no one was injured in the incident, Rony’s car, however, was partially damaged.

Rony said that the incident took place while he was passing through Dhaka University from his Dhanmondi residence to his Purana Paltan office.

When his car reached the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science of the Dhaka University, some people who were staying there came and started hitting the car with hammers, he added.

Neither he nor the driver was hurt, but his car was damaged, he said, adding that he is suspecting that the attackers were following him from the Dhanmondi area.

‘I was going to my office at about 11:00am via Dhaka University’s Teacher-Student centre-Doel Square. At that time, when the car reached U-turn opposite the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science of the university, 3 to 4 boys standing there suddenly attacked my car,’ he said.

They all had hammers in their hands and they broke the windshield of his car, he said, adding that later, when the assailants started hitting the back with hammers, the driver sped away from the spot.

Shahbagh police officer-in-charge Mustazirur Rahman said that filing a case in this regard was under way and legal action would be taken.

Rony joined the BNP from the Awami League just before the 2018 general election and he was defeated in the polls by the AL candidate.

He used to criticise the AL government on social media sites, including in his Facebook posts, on YouTube channel alongside on TV talk shows.
