Local administration of the Indian district of North 24 Parganas has imposed restrictions on movement of people as well as vehicles between Bangladesh and India through land port under Bangaon with effect on Friday until completion of the polling process on May 20 during the general election of the Lok Sabha, being held in phases.

North 24 Parganas district magistrate Sharad Kumar Dwivedi, also the district election officer issued an order to the effect on Thursday, officials in Bangladesh mission in Kolkata confirmed, adding that the order would restrict movement of people and vehicles, except those on emergency through Benapole, the country’s busiest land port with India, located in Jashore on the Bangladesh side.  


The poll time for 14-Bangaon parliamentary constituency scheduled on May 20 is from 7:00am to 6:00pm.  

‘Whereas, for smooth conduct of elections, all the international borders [land] routes [entry and exit] need to be sealed and movement of both people and vehicles be restricted from 06.00pm on May 17 till completion of the polling process,’ read the order.

The order restrained the movement of people and vehicle for exit to Bangladesh and entry to Indian Territory from Bangladesh under Bangaon, one the parliamentary constituencies in India.

Exemptions would be allowed in case of medical emergency to travel from Bangladesh to India, voters of 14-Bangaon [SC] constituency, vehicles containing perishable goods, read the order.
