The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday expelled 52 more of its grassroots leaders for contesting the ongoing upazila parishad elections ignoring the party decision of boycotting the polls under the Awami League government.
The leaders, who are contesting for the posts of chairman, vice-chairman and reserved seat vice-chairman for women in the third phase of upazila elections slated for May 29, have been expelled as they failed to give satisfactory explanation, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed the matter.
BNP earlier expelled 80 leaders from the party for contesting the polls for the post of chairman and vice-chairmen in the first phase of upazila elections and 61 people were expelled in the second phase.
In the first phase, 28 BNP leaders became chairman candidates in 139 upazilas while seven of them won the polls.
The second phase of the polls would take place on May 21.
Rizvi said that the number of candidates form BNP leaders in the next phases of the upazila elections has decreased due to taking tough action against party decision violators.
