Police picked up a college student and he was sent to jail on Monday as his and his father’s identity matched with the accused in a drug case in Rajshahi.
The victim, Ismail Hossain, 21, son of Abdul Karim of Fazilpur area under Godagari municipality, however, was released on Tuesday amid huge criticism.
Abdul Hakim Rubel, elder brother of Ismail, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that sub-inspector Atiqur Rahman from Godagari Model Police Station went to their house on Sunday night and picked up his young brother, saying that Ismail was wanted in a drug case.
He insisted the police official that there was no case filed against his brother Ismail, who was a Class XI student of Godagari Government School and College.
‘Even, we showed Ismail’s NID card to the police official as the name of the accused’s mother and his village were different from ours. But, the police picked my brother,’ he alleged.
According to the details of the case, detectives arrested Ismail Hossain, 20, son of Abdul Karim of Lalbag Helipad village under Godagari municipality area, with 50 grams of heroin on August 29, 2023.
On the following day, Ismail, who was a carpenter by profession, was sent to jail after detectives filed a case against him under the Narcotics Control Act with Godagari Model Police Station.
Ismail, however, was released on bail on February 27 this year and he then moved to Chennai in India to work as a carpenter where he has been staying with his father since then.
Rubel said that after the police had picked his brother, they informed Godagari Model Police Station officer-in-charge Abdul Matin that Ismail was picked up mistakenly.
The victim’s family then met with Sohel Rana, assistant superintendent (Godagari circle) of Police, who instructed the police to look into the matter thoroughly.
Abdul Matin, officer-in-charge of Godagari Model Police Station, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Tuesday noon that they arrested college student Ismail and sent him to jail through the court mistakenly as his details matched with the accused.
He said that after realising the mistake, they submitted a report to the court which released the college student on Tuesday.
