Two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the ruling Awami League, clashed at Rajshahi University early Sunday over sitting in the guest room of Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall.
Following the incident, a faction beat up hall security guard Monirul Islam on Sunday morning.
According to the witnesses and students, BCL Suhrawardy Hall unit vice-president Atikur Rahman, a follower of RU BCL president Mostafizur Rahman, locked into an altercation with RU BCL joint-secretary and Suhrawardy Hall unit president Niaz Morshed over sitting in the hall鈥檚 guest room at around 11:30pm on Saturday.
Following the incident, the followers of Mostafizur Rahman and general secretary Asadulla hil Galib gathered in front of the hall with processions from other halls while Niaz Morshed and his fellow leaders and activists also brought out a procession and stayed inside the hall entrance.
At one stage, the groups locked in a clash that continued after midnight. The BCL men, wearing helmets and carrying machetes and sticks, exploded six crude bombs.
The university administration and the law enforcers brought the situation under control at 2:45am in a two-hour effort.
RU BCL president Mostafizur Rahman alleged that Niaz Morshed and his men attacked his followers without any provocation and exploded crude bombs, leaving nine of his followers injured.
Contacted, Niaz Morshed said that the clash ensued among them over a trivial matter as followers of Mostafizur Rahman verbally abused them over sitting in the guest room.
RU proctor Professor Asabul Haque said that he was looking into the early Sunday鈥檚 incident.
Meanwhile, followers of BCL leader Atikur Rahman beat up Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall security guard Monirul Islam on Sunday morning.
According to the witnesses and the hall鈥檚 CCTV footage, Atikur took Monirul inside the hall at 6:20am and started asking the latter many questions.
At one stage, Atik鈥檚 followers 鈥� activists Sunny Hazari and Azizul Haque and some outsiders 鈥� started slapping Monirul in the face.
Monirul alleged that Atik鈥檚 followers beat up him on suspicion of providing Niaz Morshed information about Atik鈥檚 movement in the hall.
He said that he had taken primary treatment from RU medical centre following the incident and lodged a complaint with the hall provost.
BCL leader Atikur Rahman said that his followers detained and handed the security guard to the hall administration as the latter used to smuggle their information to the Shibir and Chhatra Dal men.
Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall provost Professor Jahangir Hossain said that he would take necessary actions against the accused after reviewing the CCTV camera footage.
