
The Dhaka Senior Special Judge Court on Sunday sent main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party former lawmaker Mohammad Giasuddin Ahmed to jail, rejecting his bail petition in a case filed on charges of amassing illegal wealth.
Judge As-Shams Jaglul Hossain passed the order after Mohammad Giasuddin Ahmed surrendered to the court seeking bail in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
ACC assistant director Aminul Islam said that the ACC recently submitted a charge sheet against him in the case and a hearing would be held on June 12 regarding acceptance of the charge sheet in the case.
On December 19, 2021, the ACC filed the case against Giasuddin with its integrated district office in Dhaka-1 on charges of amassing wealth worth Tk 1.41 crore beyond known sources of income.
After scrutinising the wealth statement submitted by the BNP leader to ACC in December, 2020, the commission found his moveable and immovable wealth worth Tk 20.95 crore.
The ACC also found that Giasuddin amassed wealth worth Tk 1.41 crore beyond known sources of income.
The former MP of the Narayanganj-4 constituency was involved in the politics of the Jatiya Party in the 1980s.
Later, he joined the Awami League in the 1990s.
In 2001, Giasuddin left the Awami League after being denied the nomination of the AL in the 7th parliamentary elections.
Later, he joined the BNP and was elected as a lawmaker from the constituency.
He is now a member of the BNP鈥檚 central executive committee.
