The government will deploy maximum force to hold the upcoming upazila elections peacefully, officials said on Monday.
Elections in 480 upazilas will be held in four phases between May 8 and June 5.
The home minister, Asaduzzaman Khan, held a meeting with top officials of his ministry and law enforcement, intelligence, and security agencies on Monday at the secretariat.
Following the meeting, Md Mustafizur Rahman, the senior secretary of the public security division at the home ministry, said that upazila elections and local government elections were always competitive in comparison to national elections.
‘We will deploy the highest number of forces with firearms this time…we have taken preparation to avoid any kind of violence,’ he told reporters.
The government has already issued a notification detailing the roles of the agencies in their respective areas, saying that forces will be deployed for five to six days during the elections, keeping other forces on standby.
The government has also asked people to surrender their licensed firearms to the authorities for 14 days.
