A Jaipurhat Additional District and Session Judge Court on Monday convicted 19 people and sentenced them to life-term imprisonment for killing a man over previous enmity in 2002.
Judge of the Jaipurhat Additional District and Session Judge-2 Nurul Islam handed down the verdict.
The convicts are Alam, Dola, Osman, Korban, Azadul, Labu, Babu, Aminur, Faraz Mandal, Shuktu, Dulal, Aleem, Nazrul, Saidul, Sanwar, Saiful, Kalam, Ukil and Zaharul, of Harenda village in Panchbibi upazila. Of them, Ukil and Zaharul tried in absentia.
The court also fined Tk 50,000, in default, to suffer two years more in rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, Abdur Rahman, son of Shamsuddin, of Harenda village of Panchbibi upazila, was picked up to the house of one convict Alam from his paddy land on November 22, 2002, over previous enmity.
Later, they beat him up mercilessly, leaving him dead.
Abdul Barik, brother of Abdur Rahman, filed a case with the Panchbibi police station.
