
At least 565 people were killed and 1,228 others injured in 552 road crashes across the country in March, said a report published by the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh.
During the time, 35.92 per cent or 203 people were killed and 13.51 per cent or 166 more people were injured in 32.78 per cent or 181 motorcycle related crashes.
In the period, 31 people were killed and 86 others were injured in 38 railways accidents and 16 people were killed and 17 were injured in seven waterways accidents.
The PWAB on Wednesday issued a press release on the monthly report based on different media reports.
According to the release, the highest number of road crashes took place in the Dhaka division where in 162 crashes 165 people were killed and 306 more were injured and the lowest in the Barishal division where in 23 crashes 32 people were killed and 92 more were injured.
Among the fatal victims, the highest 161 people were transport workers, including drivers, followed by 78 pedestrians, and 21 students.
Sixty-three children became fatal road crash victims in March.
Of the crashes, the highest 57.42 per cent crashes were caused by crushing or hitting pedestrians or other vehicles followed by 21.73 per cent by losing control and then fell into roadside ditches, 17.21 per cent by head-on collisions, 2.83 per cent by other reasons, and 0.72 per cent by collision with trains and other road transports.
The highest percentage, 39.49 per cent, of road crashes took place on feeder roads followed by 34.6 per cent on national highways and 17.21 per cent on regional highways.
Out of all road crashes, 7.78 per cent took place in the Dhaka metropolitan city area, and 0.18 per cent inside the Chattogram metropolitan city.
The association secretary general Md Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury claimed that in many cases news of road crashes, about 60 to 70 per cent, remained underreported.
The association blamed weak implementation of traffic laws, increase in the numbers of three-wheeler vehicles and motorcycles on roads, lack of road markings, faulty road construction, driving on wrong lanes, unskilled drivers and fitness defying vehicles on roads for road crashes.
