Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Muslims, was celebrated across Bangladesh on April 11 with due solemnity, fervour and gaiety as the Ramadan, the month of fasting and abstinence, came to an end.

Millions of the Muslim devotees attended Eid congregations from all strata of life at mosques, Eidghas and makeshift prayer grounds in Dhaka as elsewhere across the country.


The main Eid congregation of the country was held at the National Eidgah on the Supreme Court premises in the capital.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin offered Eid prayers along with hundreds of people from all walks of life at the National Eidgah.

The country’s noted personalities, including chief justice, cabinet members, Supreme Court judges, lawmakers, senior political leaders, diplomats and, high civil and military officials also offered prayers at the main Eid congregation.

Khatib of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, Hafez Maulana Mufti Ruhul Amin, conducted the Eid prayers.

Five Eid congregations were held at the Baitul Muqarram National Mosque.

After offering Eid prayers, the devotees embraced each other.

An estimated 6 lakh Muslims offered Eid prayers at the Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj.

The 197th Eid congregation at the ground was filled to the capacity about an hour before the prayers conducted by Shoaib bin Abdur Rauf, Imam of the local Boro Bazar Mosque.

Like every years, the main congregation of Eid-ul-fitr in Bagerhat was held at UNESCO declared world heritage Shat Gambuj Mosque.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin exchanged Eid greetings with people from all walks of life, including the chief justice, ministers, senior politicians, diplomats, freedom fighters, judges, intellectuals, journalists, poets, writers, teachers and civil and military officials at Credentials Hall of Bangabhaban.

The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, exchanged greetings with people of all strata of life including party leaders and workers, different professionals, judges, foreign diplomats and civil and military officials at her official Ganabhaban residence in Dhaka.

The ruling Awami League general secretary in a video message on Thursday greeted the countrymen on behalf of his party on the occasion of Eid-ul-fitr.

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a statement greeted the country’s people and world Muslim community on Eid occasion.

Different television channels and radio stations aired special programmes to mark the Eid-ul-fitr.

Eid-ul-Fitr is an Arabic word meaning ‘festival of breaking of the fast’.

The festival marks the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

The festival was celebrated by visiting residences of friends and relatives, hosting food parties and sharing sweets.

The occasion is seen as a time of forgiveness and giving thanks to Allah for helping people to complete their month-long spiritual fasting.

Many Muslims distributed cash and food to the less fortunate ones.
