Businesses on Tuesday urged authorities concerned to dissolve current board of directors of the Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry and to begin election immediately.

They came up with the call while addressing a press conference under the banner of Rajshahi Byabasayi Okya Parishad at a local restaurant in the city on Tuesday.

Rajshahi Byabasayi Samanyai Parishad general secretary Sekender Ali said that the chambers of commerce were playing a major role in the economic development of the country.

‘But due to the inaction of the unelected, disorganised and incompetent board of directors of the Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, we – the businessmen of Rajshahi – have become economically backward,’ he alleged.

Sekender said that a standstill situation was then prevailing in the chamber’s activities as some of the current members of the board of directors were on the run.

He alleged that the standstill situation had left about 60,000 to 70,000 businessmen in trouble.

Sekender said that although the schedule for holding an election of the board of directors had been announced for the past 16 years, the election was never held.

‘Candidates were not given any nomination form. No election was held. For the past 16 years, the unelected committee performed the duties. But now, we want elections. For this, we have submitted a memorandum to the Rajshahi divisional commissioner’, he added.

Sekender also said that they would take the streets if their demand was not met soon.

Among others, Rajshahi Byabasayi Okya Parishad president Harunur Rashid and general secretary Farid Mamud Hasan were present at the press conference.
