Theatre troupe Vivekananda Theatre premiered its monodrama titled Vasane Ujan at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Friday.

Vasane Ujan, the 25th production of Vivekananda Theatre, has been written by Apurba Kumar Kundu, adapted from Dostoevsky’s famous short story titled ‘The Gentle Spirit’ and directed by Subhasish Datta Tanmoy.

The monodrama was performed by Md Ershad Hasan, a popular theatre activist of renowned drama troupe ‘Theatre’ since 1990, and he has also worked as a cultural officer of the BSA under the ministry of cultural affairs since 2005.

The play revolves around a pawnbroker called Ashraf Boari, of a tea garden located in Sreemangal of Moulvibazar district in Bangladesh, who mourns the loss of his wife, a quiet, gentle young girl.

Ashraf, in the play, was a founder of a theatre troupe but left the theatre to concentrate on business. He fell in love with a mysterious woman Sabrina who came to his shop to sell her belongings and they marry. Sabrina also felt affection for an actor but decided not to leave his husband and she killed herself.

The play ends with a monologue during which Ashraf recalled the entire event with his wife and discovered that he destroyed Sabrina’s life by wanting, above everything else, to control her.

Md Ershad Hasan portrayed the role of Ashraf while he also narrated the other characters with details while depicting the story of a pawnbroker.

‘The multidimensional psychology of the character inspired me to perform the play, said Ershad adding, ‘in a monodrama actors have to carry everything—character, energy, physicality, and vocal performance, losing focus even for a second can break the continuity of the story.’

Monodrama brought the audience very close to the character and challenged the actor, said Ershad.

Palash Hendry Sen designed the stage and light while Hadmidur Rahman Pappu composed music and Fazle Rabbee Sukarnoo designed the props for the production.

Enam Tara Saki designed the costume, and Robin Basak did the choreography while Tanmoy did make-up for the production.

The premiere show was inaugurated by legendary actress Ferdousi Majumder.

The play will also be staged today at the same venue.
