
Eleven theatre productions by different theatre troupes will be staged at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital marking the July uprising.
Different socio-cultural, political and government organisations have also taken programmes marking the first anniversary of the student-led mass uprising, known as July uprising, which forced the fall of the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina on August 5.
Patronised by the cultural affairs ministry, the BSA will organise the event titled Remembering Monsoon Revolution that will begin today, said the BSA theatre and film department director Faiz Zahir.
Faiz Zahir said that each production’s primary budget was Tk 6,00,000 and these theatre productions would be staged at division and district level festivals along with a central festival to be held at the inauguration ceremony of ‘July Revolution Memorial Museum’ in August.
Today, Manikganj based-theatre troupe Spandan Theatre Circle will premiere a play titled Deyal Janey Shob written and directed by Shakil Ahmed Sonet.
In this project, theatre troupe Prachyanat will stage German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s play titled The Exception and the Rule adapted and directed by Azad Abul Kalam.
Theatre troupe Teerondaz Repertory will stage Shuvonkar Haat Dharte Cheyechilo written by Rizu Luxmi Aboroadh and directed by Deepak Suman while the theatre department of Tagore University of Creative Arts will stage George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm adapted and directed by Sydur Rahman Lipon while theatre troupe AntarJatra will stage Ar Kotodin based on Zahir Raihan novel directed by Khandaker Rakibul Haque.
Cultural organisation Bhoirobee will produce Agnee Shraban written and directed by Eleas Nobi Faisal and puppet theatre troupe Together We Can will produce Atmo Dhoni written and directed by Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed.
The Chittagong University dramatics department will stage Droher Raktakadam written and directed by Era Ahmed and renowned theatre artiste Nayla Azad Nupur will direct a play based on Mahasweta Devi’s novel Hajar Churashir Maa. Â
Deputy director of the BSA, Mohammad Jasim Uddin, said that apart from nine theatre troupes, the BSA theatre and film department will produce two theatre productions marking the July uprising.
‘Dhiman Chandra Barman will direct his own play Mukhomukhi and Md Lahul Mia will also direct his play Bangladesh 2.0 to be staged at different festivals across the country,’ Mohammad Jasim Uddin said, adding that the audience can watch these plays without any entry fees.
