Theatre troupe Prachyanat on Saturday staged a scenic reading of Dickhauuter written by German contemporary playwright Tina Müller at the auditorium of Goethe-Institut Bangladesh at Dhanmondi in the capital Dhaka.
Organised by Goethe-Institut Bangladesh, the play was directed by Azad Abul Kalam and it was translated into Bangla by Parthapratim Chattopadhyay under the project titled German Contemporary Plays in South Asian Languages.
The play portrays bullying and exclusion where diversity doesn’t exist in a society. Dickhauuter is based on a rhinoceros called Lou who joins Class 2b and struggles to fit in. Lou is teased and excluded by the other children and their parents who see Lou as abnormal and potentially dangerous.
‘The play speaks about bullying, which deliberately happens everywhere in society, especially in classrooms and family,’ Azad Abul Kalam said, adding, ‘The play is about how we can accept diversity and make an inclusive society.’
Abu Imran, Noor E Jannat Orisha, Diana Meriline Chowdhury, Audree ja amen and Swatee Bhadra, among others, played different characters in the play.
Neel Kamrul designed music while Md Mukhlesur Rahman designed the light and Swatee Bhadra designed costumes for the play.
Tanji Kun, on the other hand, designed the stage and props and Md Sohel Rana was assistant director and production manager of the play.
