A performance titled Laal Majlum planned, designed and directed by playwright and cultural activist Shahman Moishan on Saturday aspired to establish a people’s parliament and peaceful coexistence of diverse communities and believers.
The performance was held at the base of Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture of Dhaka University.
Through songs, processions, rallies, poem recitations, installations and performance art, the performance depicted fallen fascist government persecution including attacks on shrines, students rallies, Aynaghar, and protests during the student-led mass uprising. Â Â
The performance began at Raju Memorial Sculpture and ended at Shahbagh demanding a people’s parliament where people from all walks of life spoke about reform of the state.  Â
The performance began with the Helmet League that attacked and vandalised a Sufi musical event and later the League also attacked students and people when they protested at their attack.
Protesting at the League attack, the protesters also recited national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s poem Bidrohi in the Rangpur dialect, and later a chakma girl also recited the poem in Chakma language.
The protesters discovered parts of human skeletons at Aynaghar and then destroyed symbols of the fascist’s government.
The performance created a public dialogue where every stakeholder of the state placed their demands. Â
Laal Majlum was performed by theatre and cultural activists from different cultural troupes and educational institutions across the country. Â
‘The performance questioned power and fascism from the point of view of the oppressed, and also addressed how we could create artworks for common people on streets and in public spaces besides auditoriums and galleries,’ said Shahman Moishan.
Laal Majlum was produced by crowdfunding and the ministry of cultural affairs.
