
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy premiered legendary Bengali dramatist Bijan Bhattacharya’s play ‘Jabanbandi’ at the auditorium of Lalmonirhat district council on Sunday.
Repertory theatre troupe of district Shilpakala Academy, Lalmonirhat staged the play, directed by Dhiman Chandra Barman, which depicts the life of farmers, their struggles and sorrows during the famine of 1943.
The play revolves around an old farmer named Paran Mandal and his family. After the famine breaks out in 1943, he goes to the capital along with his family in search of food but he decides to return to the village as he fails to find food. However, Paran Mandal and his grandson Manik die of hunger during the journey.
Md Saifur Rahman, Arpita Dev, Md Shahinur Islam, Asha Khatun, Noor Nabi Islam Naeem, Md Nahid Islam, Shri Guneswara Burman, Sanjida Akhter Shayla, Md Farooq Ahmed Surya and other portrayed different characters in the play.
Abdur Razzak designed stage and props, Dhiman Chandra Barman designed light and music and Asaduzzaman Sarkar designed costume for the play.
The play was premiered as part of an ongoing project, titled ‘Chirayata Bangla Natak Manchayan’, which was launched by the BSA to promote the works of Bengali playwrights.
