Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy premiered ‘Dandadhar’ in Lakshmipur recently as part of its ongoing project, titled ‘Chirayata Bangla Natak Manchayan’, launched to promote the works of Bengali playwrights.
The repertory theatre troupe of district Shilpakala Academy, Lakshmipur premiered ‘Dandadhar’, written by Munier Chowdhury and directed by Avijit Sengupta, on Saturday at the Town Hall of Lakshmipur city.
The play revolves around an annual theatre production of a university scheduled to be directed by a professor named Hossain Amin.
As the professor prepares to direct the play, he chances upon different incidents and meets people who resemble the characters of the play, which addresses women’s struggle in the patriarchal society.
Nupur Debnath, Tinku Ronjon Mollick, Swarna Debnath, Santan Das, Mahtab Uddin Arju and Dalim Kumar Das Titu played different characters in the play. Snigdha Rajak Bristy designed the stage, Dulal Dasgupta designed the stage lighting and Debasish Ray composed music for the play.
‘Dandadhar is a symbolic drama. Although the play was written in the early seventies, it is still relevant because women are still struggling in society. I hope the play will leave an impression on the audience,’ said Avijit Sengupta.
