
Dhaka University Mime Action lifted the curtain on a two-day international mime festival at the TSC of DU on Wednesday.
The festival is featuring performances by mime artistes from Bangladesh, India, Italy and South Korea.
DUMA brought out a procession at the TSC in the afternoon marking the inauguration of the festival.
Pro-vice chancellor, academic, Dhaka University Sitesh Chandra Basak inaugurated the event.
He said, ‘DUMA has bagged awards in many national and international festivals. The organisation has been organising international festivals, workshops and others to promote mime. I wish them all the best.’
DUMA moderator Fr Tapan C De Rozario delivered the welcome speech at the inaugural ceremony, which was presided over by DUMA president Niaj Makhdum Sena.
Fr Tapan C De Rozario said, ‘DUMA has been working for the past 13 years to promote mime in the country. The organisation has participated in many national and international festivals. This is the fifth international mime festival organised by DUMA.’
‘Mime comprises a universal language that everyone can understand. In the festival, artistes will depict contemporary issues,’ he added.
Liberation War Museum trustee Mofidul Haque; vice-president, business development, WSDA New Zealand Ahmed Bari and chairman of Persian language and culture department Mumit Al Rashid were present as special guests at the programme.
Mofidul Haque said, ‘Marcel Marceau left a lasting impression on youths staging mime. Renowned Bangladeshi mime artiste Partha Pratim Majumder learnt from him. I hope this international festival will play in role in enriching young mime artistes.’
Mumit Al Rashid said, ‘Youths need devote themselves to improving their performance skills and not seek attention on social media.’
Ahmed Bari said, ‘Mime is an art form which can express a lot without any language. We need to encourage youths to practice art and have a positive mindset.’
The opening day of the festival featured performances by Italian mime artiste Paolo Avataneo, Indian artistes Pronabjyoti Das and Ratan Chakraborty, Bangladeshi artiste Shahriar Shawon, Kishoreganj-based mime troupe Jalchobi Mime Theatre, Narayanganj-based Mime Face, Rangpur-based Muktobihongo and Dhaka-based Natyatari Theatre.
Junghun Lee from South Korea, Gautam Saha, Pronabjyoti Das and Ratan Chakroborty from India, Paolo Avataneo from Italy and Bangladeshi mime troupes, including Dhaka University Mime Action, Gollachut Natyadal, Mime Team of Sruti Cultural Academy and Dream Homes Theatre will perform at the festival today.Â
Besides, the festival, which will end today, is featuring a mime workshop, competition, award ceremony and others.
