Theatre troupe Nattyapala, premiered its production titled ‘Bagh’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Monday.

The play was premiered on the opening day of a two-day theatre festival jointly organised by theatre troupes Nattyapala and Swapnadal marking the anniversary of the death of Indian dramatist and theatre director Badal Sircar.

Renowned actor and director Abul Hayat inaugurated the event.

‘Bagh’, the second production of Nattyapala, has been written by Indian dramatist and theatre director Badal Sircar and directed by Tosaddek Hossain Manna.

Bagh is an adaptation of Murray Schisgal’s play The Tiger.

The play features two characters, including a tiger and a woman. It revolves around repressed pain, relationships and boundaries of society.

Due to negligence and lack of institutional education, a depressed youth becomes an animal, a tiger. He kidnaps a working woman who protests against inequality in the state and society. After having a long discussion and argument, the two become friends.

Jubayer Jahid and Proma Hussain acted in the play.

Tanji Kun designed the stage, Moklesur Rahman designed the lighting and Shimul Saiful Islam composed the music for the play.

‘I like Badal Sircar’s philosophy and his theatrical works. Although the play was written in 1965, it is still relevant in contemporary society. I hope that the audience will be able to relate to the play,’ said Tosaddek Hossain Manna.

The festival will end today.

Swapnadal will stage its anti-war production titled ‘Tringsha Shatabdee’, written by Badal Sircar and adapted and directed by Zahid Repon, at the Experimental Theatre Hall of the BSA today.
