The police arrested seven people after raiding the house of ousted Awami League government’s former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel in Chattogram city’s East Nasirabad area on Wednesday afternoon.
The raid was conducted following a Facebook post by a person identifying as a ‘July Joddha’, which claimed that Awami League and its affiliated organisations leaders and activists were holding a meeting at Nowfel’s house to plan for the Dhaka lockdown programme scheduled for November 13.
Panchlaish police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Solaiman said that the operation began at about 3:30pm and continued for more than half an hour at Nowfel’s Chashma Hill residence.
Former Chattogram mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Nowfel’s father, was the previous owner of the house.
‘After seeing the Facebook post, some ‘July Joddha’ called me to inform about the incident. I immediately informed senior CMP officials and started the operation as per their instruction,’ said OC Solaiman.
According to the police, no family members were staying at the house. During the raid, they found seven individuals who identified themselves as household staff. They were taken to the police station for verification.
‘If any of them are found to have link with the banned Chhatra League or fascist collaborators, legal action will be taken,’ the OC said.
He further said that the claim about Awami League activists holding a meeting at Nowfel’s residence was a rumour. ‘We found no political gathering there.’
Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, son of late ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, served as deputy education minister in AL’s 2018 term and as education minister after the 2024 general election.
Following the student–led uprising that overthrew the Awami League government, Nowfel reportedly fled the country and is currently residing in India, according to media reports.
