The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday called on the interim government to issue an order to implement the National July Charter by today.

The party’s nayeb-e-amir, Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, made the demand at a press conference at its central office in the capital’s Maghbazar area.

He said that their party wanted the complete implementation of the July Charter, and the interim government should issue an order by Friday to implement it.

‘If the interim government makes any delay in implementing the charter, they would lose the confidence of the people,’ Taher said.

He also demanded to hold a referendum on the charter before the next general election.

The party central leaders, Motiur Rahman Akand, Mujibur Rahman, ATM Azad and Hamidur Rahman Azad, were also present.

Earlier in the day, a delegation of the Jamaat-led alliance offered a memorandum to the Election Commission.

They, in the memorandum, demanded a referendum before the next general election on the issue of the legal status of the July Charter, and holding the next parliamentary polls in a proportional representation system.

The National Consensus Commission on Tuesday submitted its recommendations to the chief adviser on ways to implement the July Charter, suggesting the holding of a referendum for its implementation, either before the national election or on the day of the election.

The NCC has proposed a draft of the July National Charter Implementation (Reform of Constitution) Order.

Several parties, including the BNP, want the national election and the referendum to be held on the same day, and the full responsibility for implementing the July Charter to rest with the elected parliament.

The BNP has also expressed discontent with the recommendations for implementing the July Charter, claiming that several issues have been added that were not part of the original agreement signed by political parties.

Leaders of the Bangladesh Rashtra Saskar Andolan on Thursday at a press conference at the party’s central office in Dhaka called on the NCC to sit with the political parties again to review the report.

The party president, Hasnat Quaiyum, told the press conference that the commission had failed to reflect the aspirations of the political parties that participated in the discussions.
