National Citizen Party chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari on Thursday said that the party would sign the July charter only after the government published the proposed bill for public scrutiny.
‘If the government makes the ordinance publicly available, we will sign the July Charter,’ he told a seminar titled ‘Implementation of the July Charter and the Future of the National Election’ at the central office of Jatiya Juba Shakti in Dhaka’s Banglamotor area.
Nasiruddin said that the government should publish the exact text of the order before the people. ‘Let the public see and judge it. Only then will we sign. We do not want to sign anything keeping the people in dark.’
Nasiruddin urged the authorities concerned to ensure transparency in the process, noting that the party would not approve any measure adopted in secret.
‘They may extend the date. The Consensus Commission has already given a date—we call upon them to make the order public, and once we see it, we will sign it,’ he said.
The NCP chief coordinator also reaffirmed the party’s demand for retaining Shapla as its electoral symbol. ‘We have repeatedly said that NCP wants Shapla as its election symbol.
We will contest the polls with Shapla and will not compromise on this issue.’
‘We urge the election commission to include Shapla in the list without delay and restore NCP’s right to its symbol,’ said Nasiruddin.Â
Chaired by Jatiya Juba Shakti convener Md Tarikul Islam, the seminar was also addressed by NCP senior joint convener Samanta Sharmin, joint member secretary Zahirul Islam Musa and several leaders and activists of the youth wing.
