AT LEAST six people were injured as leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party clashed with the activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at Maheshpur in Jhenaidah Tuesday evening.

The incident took place at about 6:00pm at Jadavpur Bazar when Jamaat activists were conducting a mass campaign.


According to witnesses, an altercation broke out between the two groups after the Maghrib prayers following the campaign. The argument soon escalated into a clash involving sticks and rods, leaving six people injured.

Local people rushed the injured to the Maheshpur Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

Maheshpur upazila Jamaat amir Faruque Ahmed alleged that their activists were attacked by BNP activists while returning from the campaign.

‘Several of our members were injured and we lodged a written complaint with the Maheshpur police station in this connection,’ he added.

Maheshpur upazila BNP president Mehedi Hasan Rony, speaking from Dhaka, claimed that it was Jamaat activists who attacked their party members.

‘Some of our workers were assaulted,’ he said.

Maheshpur police station officer-in-charge Nazrul Islam said that a written complaint had been received.

‘We are investigating the matter,’ he added.
