The Communist Party of Bangladesh on Friday opened its four-day 13th congress at the Engineers Institution of Bangladesh auditorium in Dhaka city, vowing to carry on the struggle towards forming a society free from oppressions and a left democratic government.

A discussion meeting was held at the auditorium with its president Mohammad Shah Alam in chair.

Shah Alam in his address stressed that the party would continue its movement against imperialism and undemocratic forces.

The country was facing a serious political crisis and for democratic transition it needed a free, fair and credible general election, he said.

He called for the unity of all the left and democratic political forces to press for the country’s early democratic transition.

General secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince said that the rise of Islamic and sectarian forces in the post July uprising period was unfortunate.

The left and democratic political forces should forge a united fight to resist such undemocratic political forces, Prince said.

At the opening of the congress, party president Mohammad Shah Alam  hoisted the national flag on the IEB premises and general secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince hoisted the party flag.

Several hundred delegates and observers from across the country joined the opening session.

The council sessions will be held at the Bangladesh Medical Association auditorium on Topkhana Road.

The congress would be concluded on Monday with the forming of a new central committee for the next four years.

More than 500 party delegates from across the country will take part in the council session, organisers said.
