
Leaders and activists of the Awami League, the activities of which are banned, on Friday brought out a flash procession in the capital’s Banglamotor area demanding the resignation of the interim government.
Meanwhile, the police detained 30 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations between Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Friday detained 12 people in Banglamotor and Gulshan areas for planning and staging flash processions in the city.
Ramna police station officer-in-charge Golam Faruq told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that about 50 people brought out the procession near the Banglamotor crossing at about 3:00pm on Friday.
‘On information, the police went to the spot and detained seven AL activists who took part in the procession while others managed to flee the spot. We have also seized a motorcycle there,’ he said.
Filing a case over the matter was under way, added the police official.
Witnesses said that the procession started in front of Rupayan Tower at Banglamotor and moved along the road towards the InterContinental hotel Dhaka.
Gulshan police station officer-in-charge Hafizur Rahman said that the police detained five AL activists at Gulashan during the preparations for a procession.
‘A group of AL activists gathered near the Police Plaza at Gulshan and was on their way to Hatirjheel to hold a procession. At that time, a team of Gulshan police detained five of them,’ he said.
They would be shown arrested once a case was filed, he added.
The police earlier detained 12 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organsations during the preparations for a flash procession at the Technical Crossing at Mirpur at about 3:00pm on Thursday, said a DMP press release issued on Friday.
Meanwhile, the police detained other six leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliated organsations while conspriring against the interim government and planning to stage violent activities at Paikpara under the Mirpur Model police station on Thursday afternoon, said another DMP release issued on Friday.
Taking legal actions against the detainees was underway, said the DMP releases.
Earlier on September 7, leaders and activists of the party and its associate organisations brought out a flash procession in Bijoy Sarani area, pressing the same demand.
On September 5, they staged three processions after the Jumma prayers in Tejgaon’s Nabisco and Dhanmondi areas.
On August 31 evening, some activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League brought out a flash procession in Dhanmondi area and had left the scene before police reached there.
On October 23 past year, the interim government banned the BCL under the Anti-Terrorism Act on the allegations of its involvement in breaching public security in various ways in the past 15 years.
In May this year, the government banned all activities by the Awami League until the completion of the trials of its leaders and activists for allegedly perpetrating atrocities in the July uprising.
