Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chair Tarique Rahman on Monday outlined the party’s two primary tasks in the coming days.

One is to prevent any conspiracies against Bangladesh and ensure the establishment of democracy and the other is to build the country into a prosperous nation that its citizens aspire to see.

‘As long as the democratic rights of the people are not fully restored and as long as Bangladesh does not return to the path of democracy, the BNP’s movement will continue relentlessly,’ he said.

He was virtually addressing the party’s Thakurgaon district unit biennial conference as the chief guest.

Tarique said that as the largest political party, the BNP would confront any threats to democracy in a manner supported by the people and the party would never follow methods that disturb public peace or order.

He acknowledged that different political parties might present diverse viewpoints, cautioning against actions that could lead to disorder or the return of the exiled tyranny.

‘In a democratic system,  political parties have the right to express their views. However, if such statements create a situation that threatens peace or democracy, or creates conditions for the return of the exiled tyranny, it would certainly be harmful to the country, its people, and its democratic system,’ Tarique said.

He called upon the BNP leaders and activists to remain vigilant, reminding them that in the past, they had united the party and the people against tyranny, adding that that task was not yet complete.

‘You certainly understand that somewhere, some people may be attempting actions that could disrupt the people’s proposed democratic journey,’ Tarique said.

The BNP acting chair stressed the importance of public participation in decision-making, stating that political parties should present their principles, ideals, and goals to the people, who would then decide who should lead the country based on the values, plans, and objectives they preferred.

He warned that any decisions made without consulting the people could create chaos and potentially allow tyranny to return.

Tarique said that the interim government had formed reform commissions and invited various political parties to provide inputs, adding that almost all democratic parties had participated and shared their opinions.

He remarked that while there was a broad agreement on some matters, differences remained on others, which he termed as natural, and he urged parties to trust the people in areas of disagreement and allow citizens to make the final decisions on those.

The BNP acting chair also reminded party members of the sacrifices made to achieve Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 and the continued efforts of thousands who fought to restore democracy.

He called upon every party activist to remain vigilant and continue working to safeguard people’s democratic rights.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and the party vice-chair Shamsuzzaman Dudu, among others, spoke at the event.
