Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said that the party’s current priority was to fully support and facilitate the smooth conduct of the national elections scheduled for February next year.
Speaking to reporters after laying a floral wreath at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the morning, Fakhrul emphasised the party’s commitment to ensuring full cooperation for free and fair elections.
‘The challenge before us now is to fully assist and support the elections -- to be held in February,’ he said.
The BNP secretary general, accompanied by party leaders and activists, visited Zia’s grave at 11:00 am to mark the party’s 47th founding anniversary.
They laid floral tributes and took part in special prayers for the late leader’s soul.
Regarding political reforms, Fakhrul said that the BNP had fully cooperated for the reform proposals put forward by the relevant commissions.
Through the party’s 31-point programme, the BNP seeks to bring about a comprehensive change in Bangladesh’s political landscape, he said.
‘If the BNP assumes the responsibility of running the state with the support of the people, it will undoubtedly bring about political change, economic transformation, and further progress for Bangladesh, Fakhrul said.
Several senior party leaders, including standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, party chair’s advisory council member Aman Ullah Aman, senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokon, among others, attended the programme.
Fakhrul highlighted Zia’s achievements, saying that the core ideals of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s politics, namely Bangladeshi nationalism, had brought fundamental changes to the country’s political arena.
He said that during his brief tenure, Zia had ensured media freedom, protected citizens’ fundamental rights, upheld judicial independence, and introduced a free-market economy that transformed Bangladesh’s economic landscape.
