At least 10 people were injured in a clash between the activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jamaat-e-Islami during a recruitment event of Islami Chhatra Shibir at a madrasa in Banshkhali upazila Tuesday evening.
The incident broke out at Darul Islah Madrassah in Baharchhara Union, confirmed Banshkhali Police Station officer-in-charge Saiful Islam said.
‘An altercation broke out between the two groups during Shibir’s recruitment program. Later, both sides engaged in a fight with sticks in the Mosharraf Ali Bazar area,’ he said.
‘Both groups also hurled brickbats targeting each other. At least 10 people from both sides were injured during the clash,’ he said.
He said that they, hearing about the incident, rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
BNP and Jamaat leaders blamed each other for the incident.
Delwar Azim, a member of Chattogram south district unit of BNP convening committee and a former president of Baharchhara union unit of the BNP, alleged that Jamaat activists harassed a BNP activist at Darul Islah Madrassah and later launched a sudden attack on BNP and its affiliated organisation activists at Mosharraf Ali Bazar.
Chhatra Shibir, in a press release, claimed that Chhatra Dal leaders attacked their activists and obstructed their program at the madrassah.
OC Saiful said that no case was filed in connection with the incident until Wednesday evening.
