Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chair Tarique Rahman on Saturday urged the leaders of the like-minded parties and alliances, involved in the simultaneous movements in the past, to prepare for the upcoming national election.

The BNP’s top leader also urged the leaders of the political parties for maintaining unity for the sake of the betterment of the country.

Tarique made the call virtually from London in separate meetings with like-minded parties and alliances at the BNP Chair’s political office in the capital’s Gulshan, said several leaders after the meeting.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, and vice-chair Barkat Ullah Bulu were also present at the meetings.

The meetings included leaders from the Ganatantra Mancha, Gano Forum, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (Partha),  Gono Odhikar Parishad, Amjanata Dal, National Democratic Movement, Jon Odhikar Peoples Party, NAP Bhasani, and Gonotantrik Bam Oikya.

Tarique also said that ‘First, I thank you all. Together we have waged a long struggle on the streets and succeeded in toppling fascism. In July, through the uprising of students, workers, and people, the fascist regime was overthrown from the power.’

‘However, democracy is yet to be restored. We must remain vigilant and further strengthen this unity so that in the upcoming election, with the people’s mandate, we can collectively run the future Bangladesh democratically based on our 31-point agenda,’ he said.

The leaders who participated in the meeting also said that Tarique Rahman urged all parties and alliances to remain united, committed to contesting the national election together and work towards rebuilding the state.

The discussions centered on participating in the election with like-minded parties and alliances and forming a national government.

Tarique also called for unity to ensure the election on time.

Sources added that the meeting participants reaffirmed their commitment to the 31-point agenda and state reform pledges, stressing that differences of opinion might arise, but unity must be maintained.

Leaders at the meeting also noted that despite ongoing cooperation among BNP and its allied parties, conspiracies are still under way — including related to the election — aimed at undermining the democratic process.

Tarique urged all to remain united to counter such plots.

Earlier, Tarique also held a meeting with the leaders from the 12-Party Alliance, Jatiyatabadi Somomona Jote, Liberal Democratic Party, and Bangladesh Labour Party on Friday.
